So much to mention about this photo. But it all starts with Richard. I noticed him while driving along Tireman Avenue today and had to stop, turn around and get out to say hello.
He was sitting, as you see here, alone on the porch of a home that seemed not quite fit for habitation. Did I say alone? No, no, no. Not “alone”. He had his friend, Scooby, to his left and a beer to his right, which appears to have come from the empty can in the bag at his feet. His feet? Yes, his feet were clad with exquisite yellow lizard (or snake?) skin shoes. He wore a suit and tie with a vest. A wide brim hat and an engaging smile. And he wore them all very well.
I approached, camera in hand, and bid him hello. He returned the greeting. I asked if I might take his picture.
“Really? You want to take MY picture?”
I began to walk up the steps, but had to adjust my approach when I noticed the top concrete step was missing leaving a wide gap to cross to gain the porch. Deteriorated by time and the elements, perhaps.
I’m John, I said with my hand extended toward him.
He extended his hand to me and we shook.
“You know, it’s my birthday today.”
“Yes, I’m 62 years old today”.
“What should I do?”
Just act naturally.
He adjusted his hat and his tie and smiled.
A few clicks then we shook again. In less than three or four minutes the whole episode was finished. I turned to leave, heading down the sidewalk toward the street.
“It’s ‘John’, right?”
“Be safe out there, my friend”.
My friend turned 62 today.
Happy Birthday, Richard.
